Have a thing for trees? Why not make a day of celebrating the whole life cycle of the earth’s vital organs on Tank Hill this Saturday?

If you’re 18 or over and have a use for dead wood, sign a liability waiver at Frankfort City Hall and get a map of Tank Hill and you’ll be free to take downed wood from the area anytime from dawn to dusk, according to the Record-Patriot. The Frankfort Tree Board has come up with this way of getting citizens to help clear Tank Hill of debris. Maple, cherry, oak, beech and ash are left on the forest floor after the Conservation District’s harvest this winter. The Tree Board asks that wood takers take care not to trample places newly seeded with grass.

You could designate your wood-bearing day as this Saturday, when a public forum will be held on Tank Hill to discuss the future maintenance and use of the park. (Rain location is the Frankfort–Elberta Elementary School All-Purpose Room.) Some residents were disturbed by the timber harvest that resulted in all this downed wood. The Conservation District saw the harvest in part as a way to cull diseased trees to prevent the spread of beech blight and the emerald ash borer. Some residents eagerly seek more recreational amenities on Tank Hill—Frisbee golf? A massive water slide? All these matters are on the table for discussion.

The forum will be held from 10 am to noon. Afterward, attendees will be invited to help plant baby trees.
